June 23rd, Author: Consequently the civilizations of the world naturally and simultaneously started developing near the rivers which initially started flowing due to the melting of glaciers near the Equator e. South India, Sri Lanka and Africa. When populations multiplied, these river waters became insufficient. Therefore some people started travelling from south to north. Such northward migration continued for several centuries and finally when these people from south India reached the banks of Himalayan Rivers, they got climatic conditions conducive to long term development of civilization on the banks of these rivers providing security of water, food and shelter for a very long time.

Oldest Religious Texts Answered By: Greetings Katthehottie, Of the two you mention, Hinduism has the older texts approx. The oldest religious texts are Egyptian from approx. The texts, inscribed on the walls of the inner chambers of the pyramids [from c. The texts constitute the oldest surviving body of Egyptian religious and funerary writings available to modern scholars.

Upanishad: Upanishad, one of four genres of texts that together constitute each of the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of most Hindu traditions. Each of the four Vedas—the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda—consists of a Samhita (a"collection” of hymns or sacred formulas); a liturgical prose.

Srinivas The Vedas contain the divine wisdom and knowledge of things directly seen by the Rishis or seers of hoary antiquity by intuition and are called Shrutis, i. Hence Vedas are called Apaurusheya, i. In comparison with the Egyptian pyramids and other ancient monuments which inspire us with their mute grandeur and perpetuate the memories of their builders, the Vedas which have most faithfully preserved the immortal words uttered by the ancient seers thousands of years ago have been inspiring millions of devout Hindus since time immemorial.

The Vedas are the fountainhead of later Indian literature both religious and secular. All Indian law givers regard the Veda as the principal source of Dharma and all Hindus look upon the Vedas as the supreme authority in all matters concerning religion, laws and social conduct. There is an unmistakable imprint of Vedic influence over Indian religions, philosophy, literature, art and culture. Even today millions of Hindus perform their religious rites with the recitation of those very Vedic mantras which were recited by their forefathers thousands of years ago.

The great Rishis of the Vedic age composed the hymns, fought their wars, and ploughed their fields; but they were neither Brahmins, nor Kshatriyas nor Vaisyas. The banks of the distant Ganga and Jumna are rarely alluded to; the scenes of war and social ceremonies are the banks of the Saraswati and her tributaries.

This was the Hindu world when the hymns were composed. India’s first spiritual and cultural ambassador to the West, came to represent the religions of India at the World Parliament of Religions, held at Chicago has said: They hold that the Vedas are without beginning and without end.

The Rigveda’s core is accepted to date to the late Bronze Age, making it one of the few examples with an unbroken tradition. Its composition is usually dated to roughly between c. – BC. The Rigveda is far more archaic than any other Indo-Aryan text.

Nonetheless Vedas remain the most meticulously preserved texts available today. The unique methods devised from very inception of Vedas have ensured that Vedas are available even today in same original form. Many scholars have called this the greatest wonder of human civilization. Someone like Abdullah Tariq, the mentor of Zakir Naik and celebrated Islamic scholar, also vociferously asserts that Vedas are the first divine texts.

Even Zakir Naik does not refute it, even though he does not state it so clearly owing to his Wahabi foundation. This very act of his proves that he regards Vedas as authoritative first divine texts. The whole Qadiyani movement is based on the assertion of Vedas being the first divine texts and Mirza Ghulam being the last Prophet.

Scientific Verification of Vedic Knowledge: Archaeology Online

The idea that the Vedas are eternal does not fit into the mental outlook of Western indologists. Their claims to impartiality and to conducting research in a scientific manner notwithstanding, they are not prepared to accord an elevated status to the Hindu texts.

I would just like to add a few comments here. Our tradition has always been of a Guru-Sishya Teacher-Student lineage. Therefore, these hymns were not penned at all until a particular time period. But they were passed down from teacher to student through the oral tradition. Secondly, Veda Vyasa compiled the Vedas and taught each of the divisions to his 4 students. So the 4 students each received one kind of division. It was then passed down orally.

Thirdly, Rg Veda may not be the oldest but it is always regarded specially compared to the other 3 divisions. Mostly because the other Vedas too have some portions of the Rg Veda be it either the rituals, upasanas or the philosophy. You have really helped me to think more about this subject of the Vedas and its revelation to the Rishis. One thing I have to say is that there were around rishis and rishikas who got the revelation, and all their revelations had no contradictions.

Thanks for such a really good blog. Keep up the good work http:

Shruti literature[ edit ] The texts considered “Vedic” , in the sense of “corollaries of the Vedas”, are less clearly defined and may include numerous post-Vedic texts such as the Upanishads or Sutra literature. The latter group of texts is called shruti Sanskrit: Since post-Vedic times they have been regarded as “revealed wisdom”, as distinct from other texts, collectively known as smriti Sanskrit: While it is subject to some debate, it is still widely used.

As Axel Michaels explains: These classifications are often not tenable for linguistic and formal reasons:

The thought Vedas are compiled by Vyasa and not authoured by him looks to be ok. I understood from different quarters that Vedas are not written by anyone and it is indeed the breath of Iswara. Meaning Vedas and Iswara are one and inseperable. Vedas are .

In working on it it seems to me that the POV warning flag had been applied to this section because of the controversy over Indo-European roots. I am not sure why this needs to be in the article, and I have moved the content here in case anyone wants to work it further. One of the footnotes was in fact not a reference, just a call for a citation.

Relevant discussion may be found on the talk page. Please do not remove this message until conditions to do so are met. My plan for next moves will be to clarify that the term Vedas is used in two ways: The Four Vedas which each have an article , and 2. The vast Vedic corpus, which includes a lot of other things.

It should be easy to tighten that up and remove some of the remaining redundancy regarding structure. Last step could be to clean up the sections on study and what they say.

These writers made lot of exaggerations to please their patron kings. Everything was written on soft materials like birch bark, palm leaf, paper etc. Since the old manuscripts become fragile in course of time, they had to be manually copied. But At the time of copying, some errors tend to creep in or sometimes even additions are made.

Many of them religious in nature- while they give some idea on prevailing social conditions but hard to put it in context of time and place.

The father of all the Indo-European peoples, it would be surprising indeed if his name had gone unremembered among them. As it is, we find that the early Greeks worshipped him as Iapetos, or Iapetus, whom they regarded as the son of heaven and earth, the father of many nations. Likewise, in the ancient Sanskrit vedas of India he is remembered as Pra-Japati, the sun and ostensible Lord of Creation. As time went by, his name was further corrupted, being assimilated into the Roman pantheon as Iupater, and eventually Jupiter see Appendix None of these names are of Greek, Indian or Latin origin, but are merely corruptions of the original name of Japheth.

Both the early Irish Celts and the early Britons traced the descent of their royal houses from Japheth, as did also the early Saxons who corrupted his name to Sceaf,–pr. He was the founder of the Cimmerians who settled originally on the shores of the Caspian Sea. They were later driven away by the Elamites see Shem 2. At the time of the Babylonian Exile, the Jews knew them as the tribes that dwelt in the ‘uppermost parts of the north’ Ezekiel
