Herberton, QLD Historic mining town nestled into the hills and known as “the village in the hills”. Historically it was a tin town with both a mine and a smelter nearby. In recent times it has taken its commitment to tourism seriously. The Historic Village has been the main attraction in the town for decades and it has expanded dramatically. The Mining Museum has a number of pleasant walks which evoke the mining past of the town. Today it promotes itself as an antidote to the coast – a “village in the hills”.

February 7th, Sometimes good things just happen … sometimes very bad things just happen … The Courier Mail journalist Peter Michael and myself were on the Atherton Tablelands covering the story of the virus that had killed four elderly patients at Herberton Hospital. For the few that may not remember — an out of control ute inexplicably careered into a large gas bottle at the rear of the cafe — causing a massive explosion that killed two and injured twenty more.

Noeleen Avenell answered her door to us dressed in one of her full pressure suits — a fact of her life since the explosion — and invited us in. We then sat enthralled as she regaled us with her story over the months since the accident. Noeleen was the chef at the cafe that day and told us of the the moment the vehicle smashed into the gas bottle followed seconds later by the massive explosion that, mixed with the burning cooking oil she was working over, engulfed her.

She woke up from a coma a month later in the Royal Brisbane Hospital with burns to near sixty percent of her body and rated only a five percent chance of survival, spent four months in intensive care and has so far endured eighteen operations — but it was evident from her talk with us that she has not lost her sense of humour. Thank You Noeleen for your incredible story, allowing me to make your portrait … and for showing truly amazing strength and dignity.

Below is one of the portraits made … and grabs of page 1 and page 12 of Saturdays The Courier Mail.

Register of Interest Wet Tropics NRM Terrain NRM is an independent not for profit organisation that works with the Wet Tropics community to promote sustainable use of land and waterways, protect environmental values and support healthy, productive and viable communities and industries. Woodleigh Station protects the Reef June 8, It is km from the ocean but a fifth-generation cattle station near Ravenshoe is becoming a Far North Queensland leader in protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

It includes major earthworks to reshape gullies, changes to grazing practices, new fences to keep stock from streambanks, off-stream watering infrastructure, revegetation projects and weed management. The Herbert catchment, which extends km from the Herberton and Ravenshoe areas to the coastal region of Ingham, is one of the three biggest contributors of sediment loads to the Reef. Third-generation grazier Kate Waddell said excitement was building about the new project, which began with gully monitoring and botanical surveys and escalated this month when fencing started and earth-moving equipment arrived for gully remediation work.

This project is the next big step. Fine sediment poses the highest risk to reef ecosystems, smothering corals, seagrasses and other plants, affecting their growth and survival. This also affects the survival of turtles, dugongs, fish and other animals that depend on them for food and shelter. Remediation work at Woodleigh Station will include eroded gullies and tailings dams from old alluvial tin mines.

Terrain NRM will be undertaking projects on a number of properties in the Herbert River catchment over the next three to five years in partnership with landholders. Construction work has also begun on another property in the Upper Herbert area. The whole Woodleigh Station project — from earthworks to fencing, revegetation, watering system improvements and grazing practice changes – will continue for a number of years.
