During the 19th century it became the High Road, as the name implies, passing around the upper edge of the then village core. Gradually, its character changed during the 19th century and accelerated in the early 20th, to become Beeston’s primary shopping street. Towards the end of the 20th century, with the trend towards out-of-town shopping and developments on the periphery of the town, its dominance began to decline – and now, in , with the arrival of a major retail development between the High Road and Middle Street, a change in the shopping patterns may again be happening.

Features[ edit ] The village has the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle Laxton Castle and is also the site of the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre. St Michael the Archangel’s Church, Laxton , mostly dates back to the 12th century; after this, the earliest known standing structure is a farmhouse dating from Conservation Status of Laxton ‘Laxton Fields’ has been designated a target area for Higher Level Stewardship by Natural England to promote conservation of the historic landscape and biodiversity.

Open fields[ edit ] Laxton parish today has much conventionally farmed land but retains also a significant part of the mediaeval open field system. Fields, divided into strips, are farmed in common among the landowners of the village. A survey of the parish carried out by Mark Pierce still extant and held in the Bodleian Library shows that these three fields were in use at that date, but that they were significantly larger than their current size. There was also a fourth field, the East Field, which was considerably smaller than the others, and farmed as part of the West Field.

The strips within the fields have also changed significantly, with changes in technology. Originally, a single strip would have represented approximately a single day of ploughing ; such a strip today would be far too small to be really practical for a tractor -drawn plough. Instead, over time, strips have been consolidated to provide workable parcels of land; the result today is that the average strip size has increased significantly over mediaeval times.

However, the practical aspects of open field farming are still very much what they would have been years ago. Laxton is unique because the open field system is still alive and in daily use. Although the village is now recognised as an important heritage site, it is home to working farmers, who rely on the land for their income. While modern expectations and needs mean that all the farmers own land outside the open fields, the open fields are not part of a museum or showcase but a living part of the agricultural landscape.

It is about three thousand years old and was excavated in The village is most famed for the stories of the ” Wise Men of Gotham “. However, the reason for the behaviour is believed to be that the villagers wished to feign madness to avoid a Royal Highway being built through the village, as they would then be expected to build and maintain this route.

Madness was believed at the time to be highly contagious, and when King John’s knights saw the villagers behaving as if insane, the knights swiftly withdrew and the King’s road was re-routed to avoid the village. One of the mad deeds seen by the knights was a group of villagers fencing off a small tree to keep a cuckoo captive from the Sheriff of Nottingham.

One of the three pubs in the village is known as the “Cuckoo Bush Inn”. Legends of the Dark Knight No. In a story titled ‘Cityscape’ in Batman Chronicles No. We could call it ‘Gotham’ after a village in England — where, according to common belief, all are bereft of their wits.
